Course Overview

This course is three days of theory and practical instruction in the lab. Students will have their new knowledge tested through quizzes, worksheets, classroom written assignments and hands-on lab assignments.They will receive a Certificate of Completion from MCAS. This course will cover the following:

  • Capacitors
  • Drawing and reading intermediate wiring diagrams
  • Motor theory
  • Troubleshooting motors
  • Thermostat and control wiring
  • Troubleshooting heating and cooling control circuits
Lesson 1 Level 1 Review
  • What is electricity
  • Dynamic electricity
  • Electromotive force, current, and resistance
  • Conductors and insulators
  • Ohm's Law and Ohm's Circle
  • Electrical power
  • Series and parallel circuits, relays, and contactors
  • Electrical diagrams and symbols
Lesson 2 Induction and Capacitance
  • Electricity and magnetism
  • True RMS multimeters
  • Electrical phases and distribution
  • Induction, phase angle and power factor
  • Motors, 3-phase motors, and single phase motors
Lesson 3 Thermostat
  • Different types
  • Terminal labelling
  • Thermostat differential, single setpoint setting
Lesson 4 Heating and Cooling Control Circuits
  • Heating and cooling control circuits
  • Flame sensing
  • Heating circuit safeties
  • Cooling circuit safeties

HVAC Level 1 must be completed prior to registering for HVAC Level 2.
